Base Camp · An Outdoor-Inspired Retail Experience
Base Camp, a 5,500-square-foot adventure-themed retail experience in Twin Falls, Idaho, built within a Planned Unit Development's strict design requirements using a dual-roof strategy that conceals all rooftop equipment.
About the Project
How do you hide rooftop HVAC on a themed retail building?
A dual-roof strategy: a sloped architectural roof conceals a recessed flat-roof well at the center that houses the mechanical equipment, keeping sightlines clean and meeting PUD design rules.

Located in a Neighborhood Commercial Zone in Twin Falls, Base Camp was shaped by a detailed Planned Unit Development: a minimum 3:12 roof slope, a 24-inch fascia, and no visible rooftop equipment. To honor those constraints without compromising the vision, the team developed a dual-roof strategy, a sloped roof form concealing a recessed flat-roof well that houses all mechanical equipment and preserves clean sightlines. The experience is built around the idea of a base camp, the place where every journey begins. Trail-marker wayfinding guides guests like a hiking route; a sculptural redwood-tree entry portal creates a memorable threshold; an indoor-outdoor fireplace glows as a campfire beacon visible from the street; and a natural palette of wood, stone, and earth tones evokes the outdoors. The result feels less like a store than a trailhead gathering place.
